The Salvation Army's Salvo Care Line is seeking a Manager to provide accountable Christian leadership, clinical decisions, business/financial management and supervision of the overall service including staff and volunteers.

The Manager is to be responsible for the day-to –day operation of Salvo Care Line 24 hour telephone counselling service.

Selection Criteria

Essential Requirements:

  • A relevant undergraduate qualification in Social Work, Psychology or Counselling.
  • Management experience preferably in the welfare arena.
  • A sound knowledge of counselling practice and experience.
  • Ability to provide clinical direction to telephone counsellors.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle crises, eg suicide attempts.
  • Demonstrated experience in accurate and appropriate recording and administrative
  • systems.
  • Well developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to participate
  • in and lead a team, and communicate effectively with people at all levels both inside and
  • outside the organisation.
  • A commitment to the Christian faith as evidenced by an active involvement in the Christian church. An ability to offer pastoral assistance, to pray with persons and to explain the Christian Gospel.
  • (It will be expected that the incumbent will be willing and able to provide Christian devotional input and leadership, and lead or take part in Corps / Social ministry as part of his / her role.)
  • A demonstrated ability to provide management support and supervision to paid and volunteer telephone counsellors including a knowledge of Human Resource Management issues, including Workplace Health and Safety, Equal Opportunity issues and Anti-discrimination Legislation.
  • The ability to demonstrate a non-judgemental approach to all people and an ability to respond to people in crisis.
  • The ability to liaise and work in a wider range of support personnel and professional groups.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a demonstrated capacity to prepare
  • reports and submissions for funding within specified timeframes.
  • A willingness to promote the role of Salvo Care Line as a Christian agency within the
  • community and be actively involved in relevant inter-agency meetings.
  • Proficiency working in a Windows environment, utilising Lotus Notes and Microsoft Office XP.
